Shutdown delays 2026 transportation policy decisions

Published: Thursday, January 08, 2026 | 12:00 am CDT C.H. Robinson government and regulations update

The extended U.S. government shutdown delayed work on the 2026 transportation reauthorization bill in Congress. This bill funds roads, bridges, and other infrastructure through tax changes (fuel taxes, excise taxes, etc.).

It can also address transportation-related policy, including truck size and weight regulations and driver licensing rules. The current authorization expires at the end of September 2026. Historically, these bills authorize funding and set policy for four to six years.

For insights on tariffs, see the Trade Policy & Customs section of this report.
