Shutdown delays 2026 transportation policy decisions

The extended U.S. government shutdown delayed work on the 2026 transportation reauthorisation bill in Congress. This bill funds roads, bridges and other infrastructure through tax changes (fuel taxes, excise taxes etc.).
It can also address transportation-related policy, including truck size and weight regulations and driver licensing rules. The current authorisation expires at the end of September 2026. Historically, these bills authorise funding and set policy for four to six years.
